Driftless Prairie Project

The Driftless Prairie Project focuses on conserving remnant hill prairies in the Driftless Region through innovative mapping methods and collaboration with conservationists and local communities.

The Driftless Prairie Project is a comprehensive initiative aimed at understanding, conserving, and restoring the unique remnant hill prairies found within the Driftless Region. These rare ecosystems, thriving on steep slopes and nutrient-poor soils, support a remarkable diversity of plant and animal species, including threatened species like the monarch butterfly and native pollinators. Despite their ecological importance, these prairies are under constant threat from invasive species, habitat fragmentation, and land-use changes.

The Big Picture: Understanding and Conserving Remnant Hill Prairies

Our project seeks to establish a holistic view of the "State of Remnant Hill Prairies" in the Driftless Region, which will serve as the foundation for strategic, data-driven conservation actions. We aim to:

  • Develop innovative methods for accurately identifying and monitoring these prairies using advanced satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques.

  • Create an online inventory that enables land managers and conservationists to prioritize restoration efforts based on ecological significance and risk factors.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to implement tailored restoration strategies and build resilience against climate change and invasive species.

Why It Matters

Hill prairies in the Driftless Region represent some of the last remaining high-quality prairies in the Midwest. They provide essential habitat for numerous species, contribute to soil stability, and improve water quality. However, only a small fraction of these prairies remains intact, and without immediate conservation efforts, these ecosystems could be lost forever. By identifying and prioritizing key prairie remnants, the Driftless Prairie Project will enable targeted conservation efforts, ensuring these valuable landscapes endure for future generations.

A Call to Action

Our work will only succeed through collaboration. We invite conservation groups, government agencies, land managers, and community members to join us in preserving the remnant hill prairies of the Driftless Region. Whether through direct support, sharing expertise, or spreading awareness, your involvement is critical to ensuring the success of this vital conservation project. Together, we can secure the future of these precious ecosystems.
